Abstract

Agriculture and food consumption contribute greatly to environmental burden, meat production accounts for the largest impact on environment, including greenhouse gas emissions, land and water use. More and more countries have published official  food-based nutrition recommendations,which include sustainability (for example Germany and Sweden),however, sustainability hasn’t been included in the nutrition recommendations for athletes so far. The quality of athletes’ diets is assessed from the point of view of sustainability, by consuming animal products, comparing protein intake recommendations, and dietary diversity. There is a consensus in the international literature on improving the health literacy of athletes, which includes nutritional knowledge, health promotion, and sustainable development. It is important that athletes and their support staffs should be introduced to the link between correct food choices,health, and sustainability.
