Investigation of dog ownership as a factor in lifestyle

Abstract
In 21th century overweight and obesity are serious public health problems. Prevention and management is possible via lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity or following a balanced diet. Researches suggest that dog husbandry is a stimulating factor in physical activity. Our survey investigates the former question and the level of knowledge related to nutrition and feeding. A questionnaire method was used among Hungarian adult dog keepers (n = 95). Generally 79% of owners exercise at least once a week. The dogs contributes 70% of all physical activities in a week. It can be stated that the knowledge of sports- and working dog keepers regarding feeding is significantly better compared to hobby owners. The issue of nutrition has not been proven in a similar way. The relationship between dog keeping and physical activity can be determined. This has a positive effect on BMI values. Further research is needed in question of nutrition and feeding. However, dog keeping has a great importance in positively influencing lifestyle factors.
