The Effects of the Olympics on the Willingness to Participate in Sports
Main Article Content
Abstract
Among the widespread health issues of our fast-paced world are diseases stemming from a sedentary lifestyle (high blood pressure, musculoskeletal disorders), which have reached their peak today; however, as early as the 2000s, several studies had already indicated that society was becoming increasingly sedentary. Many researchers also agree that setting a positive example for this age group can help them start exercising regularly. Our research was based on secondary content and document analysis, in which we systematically examined international academic publications related to the 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2021 Olympic Games. The use of secondary data collection was justified by the fact that this approach allowed for the comparison of various research findings. The aim of the analysis was to explore the relationships between the Olympics and the local population’s willingness to engage in physical activity from a recreational perspective.
Our research revealed that the Olympics involve major infrastructure investments, but the event itself and the new facilities, tracks, and parks will not yet have an impact on the exercise habits of people who lead sedentary lifestyles. With this in mind, we developed a communication strategy.
