Abstract

The world population is getting older. The increase in life expectancy and the improvement in health status allow the elder generation to engage in volunteer activities. Volunteering, which serves as an appropriate productive social participation, can play a role for the older generation that is healthier, more educated and desires personal development, and positively contributes to the process of successful aging. The aim of this descriptive study is to explore the relationships between volunteer work, physical activity, cognitive fitness and social interactions in old age. The study focuses on the sociological background of volunteering, online volunteering, exploring gender motivational differences. The recreational benefit of volunteering in the elderly is that it supports an active, vibrant, healthy life by expanding the social network, where physical and mental activity, community connections, and emotional well-being contribute to improving the quality of life, while allowing the elderly to remain valuable and respected members of society.
