Presentation of the main exercise physiological characteristics of rowing athletes and their significance for health maintenance

Abstract

Physical exercise generally improves the function of individual organ systems, thus having a preventive effect against chronic diseases. Due to the adaptive changes in regular physical activity, there is a large difference in the performance of the cardio-respiratory system between trained and untrained individuals. The tool for determining physical fitness is the measurement of exercise physiological characteristics. The aim of our work is to investigate the main load physiological characteristics of a well-trained rowing group and to compare them with reference values in the literature. Participants were subjected to spiroergometric examination, thus obtaining a picture of the performance of their cardio-respiratory system. Then we compared the results with the reference values of other well-trained endurance athletes and untrained individuals. The means of the studied group and the means of the reference values of the well-trained endurance athletes were significantly higher compared to the values of the untrained persons for almost all load physiological characteristics. In the case of minute ventilation (VE) the result measured in the rowing group was 152.3 ± 11.5 (L·min−1) significantly higher than in the untrained group (p = 0.002).
