Proven effects of CoQ10 in therapy, prevention and sports performance
Main Article Content
Abstract
Increasing number of evidence suggests that our body's CoQ10 level can be associated with several clinical symptoms and sports performance. In our review, we came across a number of studies showing that CoQ10 can have a positive effect on diseases such as cardiovascular or tumor diseases, diabetes and various neurological diseases by reducing inflammatory mediators and oxidative stress. In addition, it may also play a role in the treatment of infertility by increasing the mitochondrial energy supply of egg cells and improving sperm parameters.
It has a key role in the development of sports performance as it reduces the level of muscle damage and the parameters that indicate fatigue (CK), it also delays fatigue, accelerates recovery and improves liver and kidney functions.
The weakness of most of the publications included in the review is their low case numbers and contradictory results obtained in many cases. It would be recommended to carry out more in-depth analyzes with a higher number of cases, as well as sport-specific tests in the field of sports nutrition, which would enable the development of official, evidence-based dietary supplement protocols for nutritionists.
