Abstract

Health, adventure and sports tourism are closely linked for the central purpose of active participation and the for improvement of the quality of life. This research examines the relationship between age and sport motivation in the context of outdoor water sports tourism. In our survey (n=282), we used the Sport Motivation Scale to measure intrinsic, extrinsic sport motivation and amotivation among outdoor water sports practitioners. The results were analysed by statistical methods. Our results show that the levels of all three types of intrinsic motivation decrease significantly with age, while the level of amotivation increases with age. This implies that younger age groups have a higher intrinsic motivation to experience stimulation, to accomplish and to gain knowledge, while older age groups are less determined to overcome difficulties in the pursuit of leisure activities. No age-related trends were found in the types of extrinsic motivation. Our results highlight the importance of examining age differences in active tourism and leisure sports.
