Abstract

Pregnancy can cause so many aches and pains, but chronic back pain doesn't have to be one of the aches and pains we have to endure. With proper movement, regular exercise, postural awareness and striving for a neutral spinal position, most symptoms can be reduced. We hear a lot about the core (trunk muscles) these days, it is the key to good posture, the importance of exercising it and achieving core stability is stressed everywhere. This is true in many ways for pregnant women, those who have ever given birth and certainly for those who are planning to have a baby. The English word core means the centre of something, symbolising the position of its muscles in the middle of the body and its potential function as a starting point for movement. The core can also be described as a 'natural waist stiffener', with the transversus abdominis muscle (TVA) performing the function of 'waist brace', while the gait muscles at the bottom of the pelvis are responsible for holding the organs in the abdominal cavity, operating the sphincters and varying abdominal pressure.
